Ecko Unltd commissioned the conversion of a 12-story, Depression-era landmark in Perth Amboy, NJ, into new headquarters. A retail space occupies the base, with offices, showrooms and design studios above, plus a new penthouse with gym, locker rooms and half-sized regulation basketball court. Tasked by the urban fashion brand to develop shared, hierarchy-free workspaces, but required by the existing structure to divide these spaces across three floors, the new scheme suggests a unique solution: It removes perimeter floor plates and clads upper levels in glass to create a shared, three-level environment around the building’s edges. Cantilevered glass boxes within this atrium house showrooms and meeting spaces, while a glass-enclosed stair tower connects to the penthouse, itself clad in polished stainless steel to reflect, and blur with, the sky.
