MANHATTAN TOWNHOUSE

The sweeping scope of this seven-story townhouse project on Manhattan’s Upper East Side comprises six bedrooms; living, dining and kitchen areas; a gym; and a subterranean indoor swimming pool, as well as a backyard and roof terrace. The homeowners purchased the historic building after its renovation and then commissioned custom interiors. Existing Italian-oak paneling set the stage for a selection of modern furniture carefully placed throughout the 9,000-square-foot house. Sheer draperies and muted fabrics bring a sense of calm quietude and serenity to the interiors, as does the spare quality of the overall scheme, which allows the clients’ art collection — including works by Andy Warhol and Thomas Struth — to take center stage.
